2010 West End Eco-Fishing Campers - "Esprit de Corps"
West End's first eco-fishing camp program began in the Spring of 2009 with a goal to ensure that the children from West End would learn about  entrepreneur and career opportunities as marine biologists, environmental scientists, ecology tour guides, outboard and inboard boat engine repair mechanics, oceanographers, back yard farming and aqua-culture. The sessions attract more than 50 kids, and are held on Saturday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The eco-fishing camp opens the first Saturday in March and runs concurrently through the last Saturday in May.

The West End Eco-Fishing Camp situated in West End, Grand Bahama Island is a community based organization for kids between the ages of 6 and 15. They are  immersed into a number of activities designed to get them thinking about their role as "caretakers of the earth and living seas".

From 2009 to 2011 the camp received a major boost from the West End Foundation to put in place the programs, uniforms and all activities that were provided for more than 150 kids that graduated from the camp. The generous donations and  support from the foundation as well as other partners throughout Grand Bahama is greatly appreciated by the entire eco-fishing camp organization.

A second camp is organized in the early fall season to teach the advanced students snorkeling skills, and introduction to marine life identification along the shoreline. There are up to 20 kids who are selected at the end of the first camp that demonstrate the leadership skills necessary to move onto more challenging lessons. In future camps the kids will be introduced to scuba diving, free diving and Opti/Laser sail boats.

The eco-fishing camp and a group of caring adult volunteers working in partnership with the Royal Bahamas Police Force saw the need to initiate signature programs to teach children about their environment, and to learn the basic elements of - first aid and water safety, swimming, boating, hand line fishing, bone/fly fishing and more.

The role of the police in our community is vital to the success of the program. Their Neighborhood Policing Initiative started in 2008 to develop local wholesome activities best suited for kids in each community. West End is proud to boast of being the first settlement in the Commonwealth of the Bahamas to implement this unique partnership.
